Sustainability

Leading the industry’s transition to zero-emission goods movement.

As one of our core values, NFI’s focus on social responsibility drives us to envision ways to make a positive impact on your business and the communities it serves. Learn more about the four initiatives bringing our vision to life.

Embracing Sustainability

Our sustainability vision moving forward includes continuing to expand our battery technology fleet, where applicable, with our short haul operations and yard trucks. Trialing hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (HFCEV) for our longer-range operations, aligning fleet and warehouse operations ahead of regulations, and continuing our biodiesel and renewable diesel journey while focusing on idle and MPG improvements.

Eco-Conscious Warehouse

Embedding Eco-Conscious Methods Into Our Facilities
Our sites use clean technology and material handling equipment including lithium ion battery powered forklifts, propane-powered forklifts, and robotic stretch wrapping to reduce our carbon footprint and environmental impact. NFI builds all new construction to meet LEED standards, helping our facilities to run more efficiently while reducing costs and prioritizing climate safety.

On The Horizon For 2024

Building On Our Commitment
Our dedication to sustainability continues to grow with the introduction of new projects. We’re deploying additional battery electric yard tractors in Southern California with Tico and Autocar, while establishing a 100% zero-emission drayage fleet in the same region, and introducing NFI’s first East Coast Battery Electric Trucks through the FEaST program in New York.

Early Adopters

Forming Fleets For The Future

Volvo Lights Project
As a Volvo LIGHTS project partner, NFI has committed to bringing battery electric trucks out of the demonstration phase for everyday use. The Volvo LIGHTS project is part of a statewide initiative in California to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, strengthen the economy, and improve public health and the environment. In 2020, NFI began piloting Volvo VNR Electric trucks into our commercial operations.

Daimler Freightliner eCascadias
As a member of the Freightliner Electric Innovation Fleet, NFI was one of the first companies to deploy the eCascadia into its commercial operations. Known as one of the leading manufacturers of electric vehicles, we currently run 10 Daimler Freightliner eCascadias and have built electric charging infrastructure into our operations in Southern California.

Jumpstarting Our Goals with JETSI

Announced in 2021, the JETSI (Joint Electric Truck Scaling Initiative) Project, led by South Coast AQMD, is the largest commercial deployment of battery-electric trucks in North America to date. Helping to significantly increase the number of zero-emission heavy-duty trucks available for goods movement while achieving necessary emission reductions, accomplishments JETSI and NFI will achieve by 2024 include:

Commitment

Commitment

Meaningfully scaling zero-emission goods movement while analyzing the full impact of our own operations, NFI has collaborated to scale technology and create the ecosystem needed to support zero-emission transportation. In 2021, NFI committed to tracking GHG emissions using industry standards and reporting to customers that share its commitment to sustainability.

Leadership

Leadership

NFI’s series of “firsts” has helped drive the industryforward and created a blueprint for sustainable, zero-emissions goods movement. NFI has already operated more than 1,500,000 miles on battery-electric tractors and will be the largest zero-emission drayage fleet in the country. NFI is building the first 100% zero-emission freight logistics facility in the United States at our Southern California facility.

Investment

Investment

NFI is making significant financial investments in order to grow the clean vehicle market and create scalable zero-emission transportation solutions. NFI has invested more than $23 million to partner on the largest initiatives to advance zero-emission technology in the transportation industry and has won more than $107.7 million in competitive grants with its partners to build a foundation to scale zero-emission technologies.

Partnership

Partnership

NFI proactively seeks out transformative partnerships with leading OEMs, customers, public entities, and technology providers to develop customer-focused sustainability solutions. NFI was the first fleet in the United States to operate Class 8 battery-electric vehicles from the two leading OEMs, Daimler and Volvo. NFI has been a project partner for every major OEM’s electrified Class 8 pilot project that is currently on the market.
