The Executive Perspective – Bill Mahoney, EVP, Chief Commercial Officer

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Gain insight into what’s top of mind for shippers in today’s evolving logistics landscape.

What three shifts do you expect to see in the second half of 2025?

  1. It’s about peak volume and the impact of consumer demand on inventory and timing. We’re already seeing high inventory levels coming through.
  2. eCommerce continues to grow, and brands are navigating changes with the recent de minimis exemptions. Now, shipping directly to US consumers from outside the country requires brands to pay appropriate duties/fees, so brands are looking for more stateside fulfillment options.
  3.  Volume stability: Hopefully, the changing tariff environment will stabilize, and companies will feel comfortable making long-term decisions for the supply chain.

What are three topics that shippers have on their minds during your conversations?

  1. Tariffs, Tariffs, and Tariffs! What is the impact to my business?
  2. Cost of real estate in the U.S. and Canada. Will lease rates normalize?
  3. Transportation Rates. Shippers want to pay less, carriers want increases. When will the market turn?

What are shippers rethinking or reprioritizing in their logistics strategy right now, and how are we helping?

  • Long-term investments: In this volatile environment, it’s challenging for shippers to make decisions now, but we at NFI provide flexible solutions. It’s a partnership, and we want our customers to succeed.
  • Network Strategy: We’re seeing Shippers begin to evaluate changing manufacturing origins and new distribution nodes, considering that the required speed to market comes at a price. NFI is providing supply chain studies, network evaluations, and facility options. If it’s not already in our network, our real estate team can provide custom solutions.
  • Sustainability: Utilizing NFI electric drayage services in SoCal to help obtain WAIRE credits.
