The Port of Long Beach celebrated the completion of its new, state-of-the-art bridge opening Monday, October 5, 2020. After seven years of construction, the bridge will replace the shorter, narrower Gerald Desmond Bridge, which currently carries 15 percent of all containerized goods coming into the U.S. Designed to improve traffic and cargo flow, the six-lane cable-stayed bridge is the first of its kind in California and will serve as a major regional highway connector. As the second-busiest container port in the U.S., the bridge will aid in minimizing congestion for truckers coming to and from the port complex.1

A celebratory inauguration ceremony took place on Friday, October 2, 2020 commemorating the new Gerald Desmond Bridge. NFI led the procession with two of its electric trucks from its drayage fleet, as well as a Near Zero CNG truck, hauling commemorative wrapped containers in celebration of the grand opening.

The company’s industry-leading drayage solutions span every major port, rail terminal, and logistics hub throughout the U.S., delivering flexibility and reliability to its customers. NFI acquired California Cartage Company (Cal Cartage) in 2017, which expanded NFI’s drayage presence and enhanced its capabilities as the largest drayage operator in the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Cal Cartage was established in 1944 and NFI Cal Cartage remains a long-time partner of the Southern California ports. NFI Cal Cartage’s integrated drayage services include transloading, consolidation, deconsolidation, and customs exams.

An early adopter of electric trucks, NFI is a leader in innovation and sustainability with a focus on a core value of social responsibility. The company currently operates an electric fleet of 12 vehicles, most recently acquiring two Volvo VNR electric trucks as part of the Volvo LIGHTS (Low Impact Green Heavy Transport Solutions) project. NFI is also partnered with Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) to operate its Freightliner eCascadias and has implemented charging stations within its Southern California operations. The company plans to continue investing in its sustainability initiatives, as well as driving efforts to be a valuable partner in its contributions to the community.

NFI is honored to be part of the inauguration of the new Gerald Desmond Bridge and looks forward to continuing its positive partnership with the Port of Long Beach.
